Who they are

  • Small and sturdy, three and walking everywhere she isn't wanted: into the hurdles, onto the cold floor, out the door after whoever's leaving. She got as far as the bank in the wet one morning in spring, and came home soaked.
  • Takes hold of any visitor's sleeve and won't let go: the priest's, Edith's, Stephen's.
  • Still bites what comes near her mouth, Amice's thumb included, and is sorry only when she's told to be.
  • Wants whatever Amice has, and howls for it. Her own wooden coney won't do: she reaches for Amice's first.
  • Rides on Amy's hip and trails after her with the wood, wanting to help. Sits where she's put for a sup of milk or a crust, and no longer.

Pastimes

  • Her mother's singing, which she still listens for. If nobody sings she fusses, and goes on fussing. Her father hums, and she'll have none of it.
  • The wooden coney with the crooked nose, under her chin at night.
  • Pate the jackdaw, who makes her shriek for joy.
  • The ferrets whistling back to her father, which turns her quiet and wide-eyed.
  • Sir John's riddles, which she can't follow, for the voice he does them in. Honey, when there's any.

How they talk

  • A few words at a time, mostly names and "mine," and "more." "Amy" for her sister, "Mam," and "Da."
  • Called: "Mag," by Amice; "the little one" by her father.

In the books

  • Roger Warrener came from Hatherley with his wife Alice and two children, Amice and Margery, and took up the keeping of the lord's warren.
